It is faster growing than other Japanese maple varieties and will grow best in organically rich, moist, but well-draining soil. Deep purple-red leaves are this variety's most striking feature, with leaves turning a rich crimson color in the fall.

The 'King of the North' is a cold-hardy, disease resistant variety that produces dark purple, almost black grapes. Grapes are juicy and tart, making them perfect for making jellies and juices. These vigorous vines can get 10-20' long, but can be pruned back to a more managable size. Fruit ripens in early September.
